SurferNETWORK Roars Into Acoustic Fingerprinting with Patent Portfolio; Benefits Both Broadcasters and Fingerprinters

Patent No. 9,026,546 issued May 5, 2015 to SurferNETWORK, and six more patent applications pending, brightens a stagnant industry. The portfolio improves the acoustic content recognition process, dramatically lowers cost of content monitoring of broadcasters for royalty reporting, enables RDS and HD radio transmission of Artist & Title by many more radio stations, uniquely integrates smartphones with in-car receivers, and introduces a new advertising model by audible branding of ads having promotional content discoverable by a fingerprinting service provider’s app.

Flanders, NJ, May 11, 2015 – Internet streaming vendor and innovator, SurferNETWORK, introduces an entirely new portfolio of Intellectual Property based on the association of radio or television broadcasting with acoustic fingerprinting technology used to identify broadcast content for multiple purposes. This Portfolio has potentially strong impact in a market consisting of hundreds of U.S. broadcasters and at least two dozen companies using acoustic fingerprinting technology. The concepts embodied in this patent portfolio will offer both operational improvement and a significant competitive defensive advantage to fingerprinting service providers.

In a related aspect, it is well known that listeners want deep engagement with their music. Yet, less than half of all music stations transmit Artist & Title for presentation on radio receivers, leaving the audience unfulfilled. This portfolio introduces an important new feature to enable the presentation of Artist & Title on car radios for stations not broadcasting that data, and will be of interest to handset manufacturers and producers of car radio receivers.

On a separate tack, two of the patent applications introduce a new broadcast advertising model using audible branding of advertising content to announce promotional advertisements that offer a special benefit to the audience like a free song, an entry into a contest, a free burger, or a discount coupon. The benefit is delivered to the audience by a smartphone app of an acoustic fingerprinting provider, and will result in a new model of Advertising Immediate Response (AIR).

The IP portfolio held between Co-Founder, Harry E. Emerson, and SurferNETWORK currently includes nineteen (19) U.S. patents, with three other patents allowed but not yet issued in an advanced Streaming Media portfolio.

According to Mr. Harry Emerson, "While exploring the development of a proprietary solution for an acoustical fingerprinting system to improve our streaming operations for radio broadcasters, I created an architecture and method of operation that offers significant improvements over the state of the art in acoustic fingerprinting."

Asked about this new patent portfolio, company president, Mr. William Grywalski, said "SurferNETWORK has always been a leader in streaming, and this new portfolio again confirms that position ".

This web page lists all seven patent and application numbers, along with a high-level description of each, and contains a link to a PowerPoint slide show.

Internet Radio Streaming Service Provider Awarded 7th Patent for Streaming Media

Fundamental “Instant-On” Patent Joins “Buffering Patent Portfolio” for Streaming Innovators SurferNETWORK

FLANDERS, N.J.

Internet streaming provider and innovator of several Internet technologies, SurferNETWORK announces the award of U.S. Patent No. 8,595,372. The patent, awarded on November 26, 2013, is the 7th in a portfolio of Buffering Patents for the company, expanding upon the coverage of the previous 6 patents.

“It’s great to hear that our Patent Portfolio continues to grow, and we’re continuing to forge ahead with new developments.” –Co-Founder, Harry Emerson.

8,595,372 joins the other patents in the portfolio for the Instant-On Streaming Technology: 8,364,839; 8,327,011; 8,185,611; 8,122,141; 7,716,358; 6,766,376.

Mr. Emerson continued, “It was obvious to us when we first started working with streaming media in 1998 that it was an immature and unsatisfactory technology. The experience was so bad that most people would not use the Internet for radio or music entertainment. We set our objective to make basic improvements so that the user experience would be “Just Like Radio” – instant-on, no buffering, and high quality audio. Our achievement, as reflected in our Buffering Patent portfolio, has fundamentally improved the technology base of the entire industry. As a result, media-based entertainment; both audio and video, has become one of the most popular uses of the Internet.”

SurferNETWORK Celebrates 15 Years in Business

Streaming Provider Specializing In Radio Industry Founded October 15, 1998

FLANDERS, N.J.

SurferNETWORK, a leading provider of streaming services to Radio Stations, is proud to announce that 15 years ago today, on October 15th, 1998, SurferNETWORK was created.

"15 Years ago, the notion of a 'Just Like Radio' experience on the Internet was unheard of." Says co-founder Harry Emerson. "At that time we decided buffering a radio stream was unacceptable. So we invented LightningSTREAM™, an Instant On technology that did away with the dreaded buffering. All this time 15 years later, our vision remains focused on revolutionizing the online radio experience."

SurferNETWORK is moving ahead with a plan to develop and patent new and innovative technologies for the Internet Broadcasting Industry, and once again recreate the digital landscape for radio. Building upon the now industry standard breakthroughs pioneered by SurferNETWORK, like Instant On and Ad Replacement, the company continues to define a cutting edge experience.

"Our vision to create that 'Just Like Radio' experience for radio stations broadcasting on the Internet was a lofty goal, since buffering and waiting was the rule 15 years ago. Most of America still connected to the Internet using dial up services, if they connected at all! We've certainly come a long way since then, and we are definitely not finished." - Bill Grywalski, President and Co-Founder.

Internet Radio Streaming Service Provider Awarded 6th Patent Covering Instant-On Streaming Technology

Following on a Patent Announced Two Weeks Ago, SurferNETWORK Announces the Addition of Another Internet Streaming Patent to its “Buffering Patent Portfolio”. The Technology is Fundamental to Internet Streaming.

FLANDERS, N.J.

SurferNETWORK, an Internet streaming vendor serving broadcast radio, and innovator of multiple Internet technologies, announces the award of U.S. Patent No. 8,364,839 on Feb.17, 2013. This is the sixth patent in a series of SurferNETWORK’s Buffering Patent Portfolio, expanding the scope of coverage of that Portfolio.

The Buffering Patents cover technologies that are fundamental to modern streaming of both audio and video. This technology enables Instant-On for Internet streaming of live broadcasts as well as on-demand streaming from files.

Asked about this new patent, company president, Mr. William Grywalski, said “We are very pleased that the patent office continues to endorse the technologies encompassed by our previous patents in our Buffering Patent Portfolio. The fact that six patents have been issued after review by multiple patent Examiners validates our core belief that we had introduced a core and useful technology to the world”.

Commenting on this new patent, SurferNETWORK founder and holder of numerous patents, Mr. Harry Emerson, said “Patents are about nuances of language and technology. Patent holders seek multiple patents to ensure that the patents cover all possible aspects of their inventions. While the buffering technology is highly technical, the net result is that it enables streaming to start immediately, rather than the user having to wait while data is loaded up before playback can begin. The patent family covers various aspects of this instant-on capability. Before we invented this technology streaming was clumsy and aggravating, and many people were too frustrated to even bother with it. Now streaming is ubiquitous, and our technology is at the core.”

SurferNETWORK Granted Its Second Key Patent in Streaming Media Technology

Patented system allows for individually targeted advertising to replace generic advertising in live streamed content – substantial increase in value of Internet ads are anticipated.

FLANDERS, N.J.-- (BUSINESS WIRE)—SurferNETWORK announces the receipt of a second key patent in support of its streaming media technology. SurferNETWORK now holds two fundamental streaming media patents.

This latest patent applies to both radio and TV broadcasts, and gives the broadcaster the ability to transmit conventional audio and video ads over the air, while maximizing the value of that ad inventory on the Internet. That is achieved by streaming from the point of origin to a central distribution hub. When audience members connect at the distribution hub, the system can perform a database lookup to determine the optimum set of demographically targeted ads to deliver to each person based on age, gender, geographic location, or other parameters of interest by advertisers. A unique stream is created for each audience member; the selected replacement ads are then inserted into each unique stream so that each member of the audience receives a composite stream carrying the highest value advertising content that is possible to achieve.

In addition, replacement ads are of higher intrinsic value than broadcast ads because ads can be made interactive by accompanying them with a clickable banner, and radio stations can replace audio ads with TV-style video ads, which also can be made clickable.

While other ad replacement technologies have existed for some time, one-on-one ad targeting is difficult to achieve and frequently results in bad “up-cuts”, where one ad steps on another, an ad plays on past the start of the underlying content, an ad ends early and audience hears the end of the underlying ad that was to have been replaced, or a gap is left between ads or between the end of an ad and the resumption of the underlying content. Systems based on the new SurferNETWORK patent will be able to replace ads with precision, making ad replacement transparent.

“Although it extends beyond just radio, this patent completes a technology portfolio enabling SurferNETWORK’s original vision of creating a ‘Just Like Radio’ experience”, says SurferNETWORK Co-Founder and President, Bill Grywalski. “It compliments the business side of Surfer’s plan; addressing for broadcasters the question of ‘HOW DO YOU MAKE MONEY WITH STREAMING?’ “

“The key to inventing the technology was asking that question as our starting position. Coming up with the answer was conceptually simple but developing the technology was very complex,” says Harry Emerson, co-Inventor and Co-Founder of SurferNETWORK. “A number of disciplines were involved from understanding radio broadcast automation systems to building real time databases.”

“SurferNETWORK is very pleased to have been granted the patent because it demonstrates our company’s commitment to maintaining cutting edge technology,” says Grywalski. “We view ourselves as a technology company that happens to be in the streaming media business.”

About the Patent The new patent is US Patent Number 7,490,053: “System for Modifying and Targeting Advertising Content of Internet Radio Broadcasts”, and has Emerson, Grywalski, and Gerald M. LeBow as the inventors.
SurferNETWORK had previously been granted US Patent Number 6,766,376, “Streaming Media Buffering System”, which is a fundamental patent that enables “instant-on” capability while eliminating pre-buffering and minimizing dropouts due to poor Internet conditions, both for live broadcasts as well as content streamed from files. SurferNETWORK uses the trade name LightningSTREAM™ for this technology.

SurferNETWORK’s Video Streaming Technology Boosts Students Into Real-World Situations

FLANDERS, N.J., November 28, 2007 —

SurferNETWORK and Clarkson University have established a gratifying corporate/collegiate relationship. Through this win-win internship program, Clarkson University students are creating software and media ads for SurferNETWORK and, in return, are able to use SurferNETWORK’s streaming technology to stream college events to their constituents.

Following last year’s initial collaboration, several student interns are again working with SurferNETWORK to create media ads, a subscription service, lecture streaming, and podcasting programs. With assistance from SurferNETWORK, the students have gained experience by implementing their initiatives in a professional setting. As a result of this collaboration, the interns have made it feasible for parents, prospective enrollees, alumni, and sports fans to experience Clarkson University’s excitement from the convenience of their own computers. The video streaming provides a way for families and friends of the students at this northern New York State university to be involved in the school’s activities even though they are miles - and in some cases - continents away.

For example, a groundbreaking ceremony with New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer was available through the Clarkson media site and “Knight Chat,” a weekly show about Clarkson’s hockey team, was also accessible to all interested parties through the SurferNETWORK capabilities. The faculty also utilizes streaming video by incorporating it into their daily lectures. The stream can by found in the archive section through the Clarkson media site http://media.clarkson.edu.

President of SurferNETWORK, Bill Grywalski, said, “I am thrilled about the dedication and enthusiasm Clarkson students have shown. They are exceptional role models for today’s and tomorrow’s technology students.” SurferNETWORK will be offering more university internships in the upcoming semesters. Discussions are in place to expand the streaming capacity of Clarkson events to keep Clarkson students ahead of the curve in the post-college environment.

Professor and Chair of the Communication & Media Department, Stephen Doheny-Farina, Ph.D., said, “The alliance between SurferNETWORK and Clarkson University has provided a fantastic opportunity to combine cutting edge, new media applications with real-world work experiences for our students in the Department of Communication & Media. We intend to keep an ongoing relationship with them.” Plans include establishing streaming campus tours, tutorials, club events, and national competitions.

SurferNETWORK Advances Cutting Edge Streaming Service

FLANDERS, N.J., October 25, 2007 — On-Line broadcasters seeking cutting-edge audience experience will benefit from SurferNETWORK’s Silverlight(TM) Platform

SurferNETWORK, a leading provider of streaming services, announced today the launch of its custom Silverlight solution. Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of rich interactive applications for the Web. "Silverlight has features that our customers and their audience will love," said Bill Grywalski, President of SurferNETWORK. "Broadcasters will really appreciate that using Silverlight allows the media to pop like it is 3D."

Silverlight enables SurferNETWORK to extend its webcasting environment to work fluidly with Microsoft Windows, Mac, and Linux, and supports a wide variety of browsers including Internet Explorer, Safari, and Firefox. It further extends the SurferNETWORK player’s already wide selection of monetization and branding options, including gateway advertising, banner rotation, and the ability to customize the look and feel of the player to match the theme of the audio and video content. The SurferNETWORK player allows the audience to experience both live and archived content.

"Our developments tracked the Silverlight pre-release versions. Once Silverlight had been formally released, we progressed through our final beta tests and have put Silverlight into production", said Harry Emerson, founder of SurferNETWORK. "We wanted to thoroughly test Silverlight before our own release, and we are very pleased with the results."

Silverlight is Microsoft's Web 2.0 architectural solution to meld rich media capabilities with both Microsoft's sophisticated ASP.NET software development environment, and with Microsoft's Windows 2003 server environment. This unique combination greatly expands software and graphic arts developer capabilities; and creates anticipation of setting a new standard in user experiences on the web, in desktop applications, and in embedded systems like cell phones and PDA’s.

"Not only does Silverlight present a sophisticated user experience for our streaming customers and new capabilities for content owners, but we have been able to introduce this capability at no additional cost." says Emerson.

SurferNETWORK makes streaming with Silverlight easy. That should not be a surprise coming from a company that created and patented the revolutionary Lightning Stream(TM) instant-on technology. SurferNETWORK’s new system uses ‘auto detect’ software that seamlessly presents the best experience to the online audience. "It’s much more complex than that," says Emerson, "but suffice it to say that SurferNETWORK makes it look easy. SurferNETWORK continues to bring the leading edge of streaming technology to its customers."

SurferNETWORK Awarded Patent for Streaming Media Buffering System

Fundamental Streaming Technology Enables “Instant-On” for Live Broadcasts

FLANDERS, N.J., August 6, 2004 — SurferNETWORK, a leader in Internet broadcast services in the United States and Canada, has been issued a U.S. Patent for its "Streaming Media Buffering System," which it has trademarked as Lightning Stream™. The patented media buffering technology enables Instant-On capability for live broadcasts, and is the core technology underlying SurferNETWORK’s “JUST LIKE RADIO” experience for Internet broadcasts.

“SurferNETWORK introduced ‘Instant-On’ as a cornerstone of our proprietary webcasting solution in 2000,” said Bill Grywalski, President and Co-Founder of SurferNETWORK. “SurferNETWORK was the first to introduce ‘Instant-On’ for live broadcasts from radio stations or similar real-time sources. Being granted a patent on this technology affirms our continuing leadership role in the streaming media industry.”

SurferNETWORK’s technology allows listeners to select a radio station, and the audio starts within about one second of station selection. As described in the patent, the server first builds up a buffer from the radio station, functioning much like a tape-delay. When a user connects, the server sends a torrent of stored-up audio packets to the player, enabling it to begin playing immediately and to build up a buffer in the player while the user listens.

If there are interruptions in the Internet connection to the player, the player continues to play from its buffer. If the Internet connection is restored before the buffer runs out, the server rebuilds the player's buffer in the background. All the while the listener enjoys uninterrupted audio from the moment he or she "tuned-in" the station.

About the Patent

SurferNETWORK’s US patent # 6,766,376 describes SurferNETWORK’s unique method of enabling a “JUST LIKE RADIO” experience for an uninterrupted listening experience over an internet connection.  This patent covers:

  • One Second Tuning from Station to Station
  • No Pre-Buffering
